Old Tales

Last week's story about the young boy going off on a fishing adventure was actually finished on a seperate blog, so I apologize if you were looking to finish the story. Instead you can visit the vitamin shoppe or this blog on the best multivitamins. I'm sure they'll have something interesting.

Anyway, night approaches, and I am tired earlier these days, so I will keep this post short.

The beach was crowded with tourists this weekend. Disgusting. I don't mind churning waters, but when the sands churn with the feet of pasty, cellulite thickened midwesterners who've clawed their way out to the coast while the kids are out of school.....let's just say I try to avoid the whole mess.

Beaches are my ideal of the serene, the natural. And a packed beach littered with Corona bottles, inflatable toys, and the scent of suntan is not natural OR serene.

I drove 20 miles up the coast on Saturday hoping the crowd would eventually end, it didn't. This weekend I'm avoiding the coast altogether. Maybe I'll stay in and watch a movie with serene beaches.

Sea Turtles

The boy woke two hours before dawn. He was the only one this morning. Old pa couldn't make the walk, and mom and dad slept in on Sunday. Abel was still at school, she'd be back next week, but that would be too late. Today was one of the last days.

He grabbed his water trousers and a shirt from his trunk in the corner, giving each a jiggle to whip away any spiders. The garden shovel and the siphon were under old pa's bed. The boy tip toed into old pa's room. The room and old pa smelled like baby powder. Old pa was a quiet sleeper for an old man, impossible to tell when he was snoozing or just ignoring the rest of the family. Even in bed he looked as though he might snap his eyes open and shake his fist at the boy for prowling around the room. The boy wasn't afraid Old pa would be mad, but he knew if Old pa woke, he would want to accompany the boy down to the beach, and with Old pa's brittle bones, they might not make it by day break. Alone, the boy could sprint half the distance to the beach and jog the rest of the way, and still have an hour or more before the turtles were gone.

The boy crept to the bed, squatted down and eased the siphon and shovel out. The siphon caught on something. The boy yanked quick and something rattled under the bed.

"You're taking my tools-" Old pa began, but the boy had already dashed out the door.

TO BE CONTINUED...

This is the beginning of a short story I'm writing called "Sea Turtles." I don't know where its going, but I'm putting some effort into it. In the mean time, spend some of your internet business over at Mark Sisson's great health blog. He recently wrote an amazing post harping on a sort of paleo diet called the Primal Blueprint.

How to Relieve Stress with Orac Value

  • May 16, 2008
  • Post a comment

I'm taking a break from my yarns about seafarring to talk a bit about supplementation and vitamins. It's important to start your day off with a solid multivitamin. How do you know if your multivitamin is solid? That's where orac value comes in. Orac value is the specific set value of an essential vitamin or mineral in relation to 100% of the body's daily needs. The more orac value a vitamin has the better.

So, be certain to take a multivitamin with high orac value. Beyond the essential vitamins and minerals. You'll probably want some other nutrients as well. There are plenty of antioxidants to choose from. Personally, I would suggest phosphatidyl serine, as it is a nutrient that helps out if you're looking for ways on how to relieve stress. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it.

Finally, before I go, I'd like to mention a delightful post about abs on a high fat diet, written by Mark Sisson who looks like he's got the body of a 23 year old sailor (yet he's over twice that age!). It's a really good blueprint for some great health tips on creating those washboard abs. Good luck with the nutrition, next month its back to the high seas, and scurvy and the rest the ocean has to offer.

My first sight of the ocean.

I was born far from the ocean. Though before my birth, my parents took a trip to Massachusetts. It was on a gray beach on the New England coast when my dear mother felt me kick for the first time. She said the waves must have been calling.

I didn't see the ocean until I was nine. My great grandmother had died. I had never met her, my first glimpse of the woman would be as rest in her coffin. Both my father and mother had jobs and could not attend the funeral, I guess I was the conciliation gift to the rest of the family, the ambassodor for the Bunkoffs, so I flew alone down to Sarasota Florida.

A glorious old crone with patchy hair and mismatched eyes toted me around for the week of the funeral, and I met relatives of all sorts who lavished more attention on me, than on the corpse being visited. The crone's name was Sammy or Sandy and she took me to the beach and let me run wild.

I swam out as far as I could, too far to swim back on my own. But everyone who knew me was too old for the cold ocean and a life guard had to paddle out to haul me back in.

The lifeguard was burly, not a Bay Watch type, and he spent the rest of the afternoon teaching me how to swim. I loved the ocean, and I've never been to a more enjoyable funeral since.

And on a separate note, if you are trying to find people with orthorexia nervosa, I would suggest reading up on the disorder at Mark's Daily Apple. I've been doing research on orthorexia for a job recently, just thought I'd mention it.

A yarn about omega 3 vitamins

Omega 3 vitamins. Any good sailor can't make time or them. Then again, every good sailor gets plenty of omega 3's in his diet without having to take those gooey little supplement pills or flax seed oils. Omega 3's come from fish. Not only fish, but all fish have plenty of omegas for the swarthy sailor. And since fish is more-or-less the only thiing we eat, we are never lacking. In fact, there's more a chance of me developing scurvy from a lack of vitamin C than developing muscle ailments from a lack of omega 3 amino acids.

I'd also like to mention a little blog I found on how to deal with stress. It's not much, but neither is this one! Until next time, keep it yar!

The Severe Nature of Dolphins

  • Feb 12, 2008

Dolphins are the puppies of the sea, yes? Cute and smooth, they make adorable squeamish noises and they follow our boats. They are little gray safety beacons amidst a ruthless sea.

Or are they? It has long been the catercall of the environmental jingoists to wretch at the horrors of dolphins caught in tuna nets, but I say this:

1) The dolphin is NOT an endangered animal. In fact, it is far from endangered, it is a thriving species.

2) The dolphin is an animal LIKE ANY OTHER. We eat cows, pigs, chickens, we eat all manner of fish, certainly mammals are not off limits. The dolphin is a mammal. The only difference between the dolphin and most of our market produce is that the dolphin is a sea mammal.

3) Dolphins can be dangerous. Like whales, dolphins have an irrational propensity toward occasional violence. There have been numerous cases of dolphins attacking humans, and even cases of dolphins killing and even raping humans. As bazaar as the circumstances may be, these are not purely docile creatures.

In my eyes, the dolphin is a perfect example of the idea of well intended earth sentimentality fallen amorously astray. The dolphin is given the attention of the public for one reason alone: because it is cute.

True environmentalism is brought about by people who attempt to legislate and pass laws protecting coral reefs, thick habitats for a whole host of marine biology. People who target the singular, just the dolphin, and ignore the rest of the natural ecosystem are actually the ones messing with nature, not the ones preserving it.

Okay, enough with the bitter old man, now I give you some vitamin information. Go to the best multivitamin site, which is actually a spin off of the major vitamin website called Primal Nutrition. Either one will help you with further vitamin information. Ahoy, and good day.

Fish Stink!

  • Dec 6, 2007
  • Post a comment

I have been a deep water fisherman for thirteen years. I fish mainly for wholesale tuna and salmon, but I have been on crab boats in the baltic and off the shores of Alaska, I have fished for some of the most exotic species in the pacific islands, and I was even on a whaler once, though we killed no whales.

Man cannot live on bread alone, but he can live on FISH alone. I have. I think it is the perfect food, healthy, tasty, and plentiful.

Unfortunately fish stink! Pretty much anything belched up from the ocean is going to smell of the slime and rot from which it swims in, no matter how sweet the flavor. I catch stinky fish. This is my fisherman's blog. Hopefully not all my tales will be as tall as they are at Bico's bar on a Friday night, but yar, here they be.
